Promise Service

After six weeks of preparation, prayerful consideration, pendant making and personal customary writing we gathered in the Community Chapel for our Promise Service. There were a mix of Companions renewing their Community Promise and Novices taking their Community Promise for the first time.

We re-read our Rule of Life, prayed together and shared story and song…

Like a vow that is tested, like a covenant of old.
Your love is enduring, through the winter rain,
And beyond the horizon with mercy for today.

Faithful you have been and faithful you will be.
You give yourself to me, and it’s why I sing…

Your praise will ever be on my lips, ever be on my lips

Each member was invited by our Abbot, Bishop Martyn, to place their Customary and Cross on the altar table.

We believe that God has called the Community of the Tree of Life into being and invites us to share a way of life shaped by a common commitment and Rule. Today the Community makes a shared Promise to live according to this Rule for the period of a year.

We stood together to make our Community Promise. Each member received their Cross pendant and was blessed by the Abbot, who then led us in the breaking of bread.

After our short service we gathered in the refectory for coffee before making our way to Leicester Cathedral to take our seats at the Diocese’s annual Called Together Service, where we publicly affirmed our promises. It was such a privilege to stand alongside lay ministers from around the Diocese as they were licensed for mission and ministry.
